Prime Perspective: Taking the ‘U’ out of Uber

Ah, corporate logo redesigns….gotta love these. I haven’t seen this much controversy over a new logo since Gap revamped theirs a few years ago, and the public gathered their pitchforks and torches about the change. But that’s the thing – the majority of us humans fear change, no matter if it is for better or worse. But was what Uber did here change for the sake of change, or to elevate the brand with real purpose?

Uber’s old logo was (in my humble opinion anyway) what a logo should be: simple and identifiable. Its flat design and use of the single letter ‘U’ was easy to read while still looking high tech. Their new logo, which is a part of a larger branding effort, tries to work really hard to tell its story of growing from what it was just a few years prior. This story was hugely influenced by Uber’s CEO, who admittedly has stated that he is not a designer. His reasoning behind the change is not without justification, but this explanation of “why” seems to negate the benefits of the new design.  Uber is a relatively young company, and to make such a change now may confuse the public rather than help it.

A logo shouldn’t need to tell a story or “say” anything. It should be a word and/or an icon that should be easy to remember and ground the brand. All the other story telling is for those marketing folks to figure out. I can certainly understand the objectives, but the shift in direction appears to be removing everything recognizable about the brand, and muddying it with too many elements that get in the way of Uber’s true purpose.

Up until this point, I have never used Uber.  But I instantly recognized the brand just by its logo which was becoming relatively iconic.

And my opinion now?  All I see is a roll of toilet paper. Try unseeing that.
